How to Build a Treehouse (Using Affordable or Recycled Materials)

Building a treehouse is a classic Kiwi DIY project – and a great way to create a backyard adventure zone for the kids (or a peaceful retreat for the grown-ups!). With a bit of planning and some affordable or recycled materials from Renovation Warehouse in Whangārei, you can build a safe, sturdy treehouse without spending a fortune.

Here’s how to get started.

1. Choose the Right Tree

Pick a healthy, well-rooted tree with a strong trunk and sturdy branches. Macrocarpa, Puriri, oak, or pōhutukawa are all good options in Northland. Ideally, you want a tree with a natural fork or a wide limb to support the base.

Safety first: Avoid trees that lean, have visible rot, or brittle branches.

2. Sketch Your Design

Decide on the size and shape of your treehouse, and how high off the ground it will be (we recommend under 2.5m for younger kids). Square or rectangular platforms are easier to build. Depending on the tree, you can either attach the platform directly or build a freestanding base next to it with support posts.

3. Grab Your Materials from Renovation Warehouse

We’ve got a wide range of new and second-hand building materials perfect for a treehouse build, including:

  • Treated timber offcuts for framing and flooring

  • Recycled decking timber or plywood sheets

  • Used fencing timber or weatherboards for walls

  • Corrugated iron for roofing

  • Pre-loved windows, doors, and hardware

  • Ladders, ropes, or recycled stair treads

Check for dry, straight timber that’s free of rot or borer.

4. Build the Platform

The platform is the heart of your treehouse. Secure beams to the tree using heavy-duty brackets or bolts, or build a raised frame using recycled posts. Add joists and lay your flooring using ply or decking timber. Keep it level and rock-solid.

5. Frame It Up

Build simple wall frames and clad with second-hand ply, timber panels, or recycled materials. Cut out space for windows or even a trapdoor. Use leftover roofing iron for a watertight sloped roof – we’ve got new and second hand options in stock to choose from at bargain prices.

Don’t forget safety – include a railing or balustrade all the way around.

6. Add the Fun Bits

Ladders, climbing ramps, or rope ladders are all great for access. Finish it off with paint, chalkboards, bunting, or even a mailbox. Let the kids get involved and make it their own.
